Introducing a new addition to the patio: the Crocosmia ‘Red Lucifer.’ This vibrant red perennial has quickly become a popular stop for the ruby-throated hummingbirds with the first blooms appearing on June 27. The ‘Red Lucifer’ can be overwintered in northern climates (hardiness zones 5-9) and can be grown in a container.

Patio Life began with a question, “Why is the wasp eating the wood chair?” Now, a new question arose, “Do hummingbirds prefer feeders or flowers?” After four seasons of observation, tallying over 8,000 sightings and 16,000 flowers visited, the statistics have been analyzed and the question answered—at least on this patio.
