May has buzzed with activity for ruby-throated hummingbirds, marking a record-breaking month for sightings to start the season with 259. Sightings have surged over the past five years, skyrocketing from a mere 21 in 2020 to an impressive 259 in 2024.

Among the favored spots, the ‘rock’n blue suede shoes’ blue salvia reigns supreme, drawing the hummingbirds 82% of the time, followed by feeders at 11%, and other plants like lantana at 7%.

Studies hint at the possibility of hummingbirds displaying site fidelity¹, returning to the same locations annually. Here’s hoping this upward trend persists for 2024.
